  1. At the end of 2006, the Freelander will be nine years old, a long life for a vehicle conceived in the dark days of British Aerospace’s ownership of Rover and Land Rover. Today’s Freelander is loosely based on the archaic Rover 200 platform. The new model will be a very different beast with a new platform, state-of-the-art powertrain, clean, crisp styling and, hopefully, unprecedented build quality thanks to a switch to Jaguar’s Halewood plant.

The most noticeable change for the new Freelander is its chunkier proportions. The car sits on a much longer wheelbase and is wider, too. Overall length is very close to today’s 4.4m but, with the wheels pushed closer to the corners, insiders report that the car’s stance is much-improved. ‘Overall, the look is not quite as style-minded as the new Discovery,’ said a source familiar with the car. ‘We have to remember that most people come to the Freelander from cars, so we’re not trying to be a small Discovery.’

Key details like the one-bar grille and stepped roof will remain. Other important features are the absence of body cladding and a strong styling swage line along the car’s front wings, retaining the Freelander’s clean and classical styling. The beltline rises towards the rear haunches, like on many cars. Just a single bodystyle – a five-door hatchback – is currently being engineered. Low sales have killed the three-door soft-back model.

Codenamed L359, that five-door will be based on a development of the new Focus platform. Known as EU CD, the same platform will underpin the replacement for the Volvo S60, XC60 soft-roader, Ford Galaxy and Ford soft-roader, dubbed MAC. Like on the Ford Focus/ Mazda 3/Volvo S40 project, the term ‘platform’ is really shorthand for a component set that each brand’s designers can delve into when creating their own distinct vehicle, providing commonality of parts hits around 40 per cent. Usually, the target is 60 per cent, but Land Rover’s specific engineering needs have reduced this figure.

The new Freelander will stick with a car-derived four-wheel-drive system that eschews a separate low-range transfer gearbox, an omission that saves both weight and complexity. But this second-generation off-roader is expected to be more sophisticated than the current Freelander and is rumoured to include an optional limited-slip rear differential. Engines will be picked from within the Ford empire and tweaked for a torquey SUV application. Land Rover will be able to choose from three four-cylinder petrols: a 115bhp 1.6 litre, 130bhp 1.8 and 145bhp 2.0, which replace today’s single choice of a Rover-derived 1.8. The platform is engineered to take Volvo’s five-cylinder units across the engine bay, although Land Rover will prefer a Ford V6 petrol for the US market.

Common-rail turbodiesels from the Ford/Peugeot ‘Lion’ family will replace the BMW 110bhp 2.0-litre unit. An entry-level 115bhp 1.8, mid-range 136bhp 2.0 and 173bhp 2.2-litre are all potential choices for Land Rover’s engineers. A version of the 2.7-litre V6 TD is also under consideration. The chief weakness of the current Freelander is its cabin quality, despite a clever revamp in 2003. Expect higher-grade plastics and fabrics to bring a more quality feel to the cabin. The design itself is understood to be a little less formal than the Range Rover’s and Discovery’s, in a bid to appeal to car buyers who have to be teased out of their hatchbacks and saloons.

The Freelander will be pitched as one of the few junior SUVs with off-road ability, but Land Rover is also keen to stress its ability on Tarmac, where most will spend the majority of their time. The car-derived rack-and-pinion steering should make the new Freelander a sharper drive. And, although the exact suspension set-up is still secret, it is reasonable to assume that the EU CD platform’s suspension of front struts and rear multi-link will be heavily upgraded for 4x4 applications. New Freelander’s wider stance and revised four-wheel-drive system should bring welcome increases in grip, roll resistance and high-speed stability. And the new platform and powertrains should improve refinement at speed, the main weakness of today’s Freelander.

‘We might be sharing a platform, but this is a real Land Rover,’ said a senior source. ‘We have the freedom to do just about what we want.’ Sales kick off in late 2006 with prices from around £16,500.

  3. One year ago the Jaguar XJ with long wheel base debuetierte in New York. 2005 sets the British still for one drauf and shows the long XJ in a sporty luxury version. As super V8 Portfolio is the XJ quasi a XJ with everything. In the Interieur comprehensive leather equipment, each quantity of noble wood applications as well as electrically adjustable single seats have responsibility in the rear, separately by a large center console for Portfolio equipment. Further extras are a DVD Entertainmentsystem with Surroundsound system as well as a four-zone air conditioning system. Particularly is also the power source of the Portfolio. The 4,2-Liter-V8-Kompressor was resharpened of 390 to 400 HP and 553 Nm torque, the six-course mechanism was adapted. So the black cat is to accelerate in 5.0 seconds of zero on 100 km/h and to achieve an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km/h. Prices Jaguar gave however still no data.

Crossfox - to challenge Rover Streetwise?

The theme chosen for the Crossfox is that of nature, and it's aptly reflect in the choice of trim. Black leather buckets are trimmed with olive inserts to give the car an earthy look. The sportier Fox Pepper makes use of two-toned white and black buckets with a sports steering wheel. Three individual white-faced gauges rest atop the dashboard in a similar fashion to the Smart Roadster, completing the visual happenings of the engine. Aluminum pedals, and an aluminum shifter knob have also been thrown into the Pepper's package.

  5. Little more than one month ago, Volkswagen revealed their Fox. At the time, it was slated to be a South-American domestic market product to replace the Gol, and to keep the lineup in ship shape. Since this time, however, Volkswagen have decided that the Polo-based Fox will replace Volkswagen's enrty-level city car, the Lupo come 2005. Shown here are two variants of the city car, in sporty as well as a slightly tougher offroader theme.

    foxpepper-01.jpg

Fox Pepper - the hottest Fox on the market. Powered by 105 hp 1.6 engine. The real GTI?

The first of the two new model additions is the CrossFox. Similar to the Polo Fun that was introduced at this year's Frankfurt show, the Crossfox is a slightly tougher version of the cute Fox. Raised by 46 mm, the CrossFox perches well above the road, with the grille guard and extra spotlights leading the way. Silver brush trim brightens up the scratch-resistant matte-black plastic front and rear bumpers, while on the car's tailgate rests a full-size spare tire. It seems as if the CrossFox is a reincarnation of the infamous Mk.II Golf Country. Power comes from either a 1.0 liter inline four, or a larger 1.6 liter engine.

    crossfox-01.jpg

Double the groundclearance, the CrossFox is the baby brother to the Polo Fun.

On the other side of things, appealing to a much broader crowd is the Fox Pepper. The sportiest of the Fox family, it's powered by a 1.6 liter 16 valve engine that makes an easy-revving 105 horsepower. But aside from having the grunt, Volkswagen have gussied it up in the looks department. A special front air dam, rear valance and side skirts give the car a more aggressive look, and they're also painted in body colour. If that weren't enough, the tiny car has been fitted with 215/40 R 17 high performance on Golf R32 lookalike wheels.

    foxpepper-int.jpg

Well equipped for a basic city car. Note Pepper's dash-top instruments and alloy trim.

Size notwithstanding (it is 3.84 metres long, after all) both models of Fox has been furnished quite lavishly. Curvy, and crafted from the textured 'soft-feel' plastics, it wraps around the single-gauge instrument cluster. The simple center console features two knobs for heating and ventilation, as opposed to the typical three. Plenty of storage space is to be found inside the Fox with trays stretching across the steering column's base, and deep cubbyholes on the dash as well as along the passenger's side, in place of a glove box.

Toyota i-Unit Concept Debuts at New York Auto Show

    Inspired by a leaf

Toyota's i-unit concept will make its U.S. debut at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The single passenger i-unit is a form of "personal mobility" that seeks to balance freedom of movement, harmony with society, and harmony with the Earth's natural environment. Its design was inspired by a leaf and expresses the power of the unknown, the logic of living things and the simple beauty of waste-free functionality.

The i-unit creates a seamless transformation between the vehicle and human movement, minimizing occupied space and energy consumption with its lightweight and ultra compact size. Its components are made with decomposable and recyclable materials to reduce impact on the environment.

The concept operates in an upright and horizontal mode. Its small size enables the driver to move among people in an upright position in low speed mode. The i-unit reclines in high-speed mode and its low center of gravity ensures stable handling.

Drive-by-wire technology and intuitive handling allow the driver to maneuver quick turns and drive at high speeds. In addition, a driver support information system uses sound, light and vibration to facilitate interactive communication.

The i-unit features Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology that permits safe and efficient autopilot driving in specially equipped lanes.

Customization is also integral to the concept. A personalized recognition system can provide information and music to the driver, while the body color can be personalized according to the driver’s preferences and emotions.

The concept vehicle will also be featured at the Toyota Group Pavilion at EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan. The Expo is scheduled to run from March 25 to September 25 of this year.

  7. Nissan Sport Concept to Debut at NY Auto Show

The Nissan Sport Concept, which will make its public world debut at the 2005 New York International Auto Show, is the latest in a series of dynamic performance/youth concept vehicles following the Nissan Actic and Nissan AZEAL concepts.

The Sport Concept is a dynamic three-door hatchback with a dramatic four-seat interior. It offers the look and feel of a sports tuner car, yet is conceived as an affordable, attainable vehicle for buyers entering the new car market for the first time.

“The story behind the development of the Sport Concept, AZEAL and Actic is that Nissan is thinking big about the small car segment,” said Jack Collins, vice president, product planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “With these three design explorations, we’re focusing on how we can bring Nissan’s heritage of innovation, sportiness and driving pleasure to a category of vehicles that traditionally lack design excitement and strong visual appeal.”

“The Nissan Sport Concept, like the AZEAL and Actic before it, is first and foremost a showcase of future thinking, yet it is also a car that would be right at home in Nissan showrooms in the not-too-distant future,” said Collins. “Nissan has a strong global lineup of compact enthusiast vehicles, including the March, Cube, Tiida, Note and Sentra SE-R, and, in the Nissan 350Z, one of the world’s most desirable sports cars. The new Nissan Sport Concept fuses the best of both worlds.”

The exterior of the Nissan Sport Concept combines shapes and forms that are both geometrical and mechanical in feel, creating a sense of acceleration and kinetic energy. The dynamic fender forms give the special Pearl White-painted body a look of pure, almost animal performance. Its athletic roofline is marked by a large rear roof-mounted spoiler, while its bold surface composition, robust fender character lines, deep front spoiler and side sills, and large wheels and tires provide an animated, video game-like stance.

The body construction utilizes both metal and carbon-fiber composite components. The 20-inch six-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels feature a machined and lustrous paint finish surface treatment. The Sport Concept’s headlights and rear combination lights utilize small lamps with multi-layered reflectors.

“The Nissan Sport Concept may be small dimensionally but it is large in its dynamic energy – aggressive, highly functional and definitely street-wise,” said Collins.

The interior of the Sport Concept is designed to fit four adults comfortably, yet with an emphasis on the front two seats – with every element of the cockpit existing to enhance the vehicle’s engaging driving experience.

The deep, body-wrapping front bucket seats are covered in Wolf Gray leather with double-layered pearl suede inserts and feature formed head restraints and integrated 4-point seat belts. The instrument panel includes integrated tachometer and gauges and a distinctive center cluster. The Sport Concept interior also offers a three-spoke steering wheel and solid-appearance center console with the emergency brake lever integrated into the console lid.

Independent rear seats, also covered in a combination of leather and suede, offer true four-place seating with integrated 4-point seat belts. Other rear passenger features include center console-mounted support grips and a large blue-cone speaker and woofer located in the rear parcel shelf.

“The Nissan Sport Concept is as close to performance art for the street as you can get – modern, cool, ready to run,” said Collins. “When it comes to the next wave of small car design, a SHIFT_ is about to be made. And Nissan is making it.”

About the Nissan AZEAL and Nissan Actic

The Nissan AZEAL Coupe Concept, which debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2005, is a fresh interpretation of the classic compact sports coupe - an affordable, performance-oriented entry-level coupe with the style and personality to match the lifestyles of its young, active target buyers. The AZEAL design exercise is the first concept car created by Nissan Design America’s (NDA) new studio in Farmington Hills, Mich.

AZEAL features an aggressive body design with wide fender flares, short overhangs and a sharply sloped rear roofline with integrated active airfoil. The interior combines a dark, industrial metallic instrument panel appearance contrasted by Wasabi Chartreuse fabric seats and an open greenhouse with glass-panel roof. It rides on 19-inch wheels and tires.

The Nissan Actic, shown for the first time at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, is a "content rich" design exercise created by the original NDA studio in La Jolla, Calif. It combines a simple, confident exterior form with flexible, modular seating and a unique “digital canvas” interior.

Actic makes a visionary statement from Nissan about how vehicle owners will approach technology in the future. In place of traditional content-heavy vehicle control systems that become outdated immediately, Actic's handheld "key fob"-based Information Technology (IT) system allows the user to “grow” the interface with infinite flexibility and updateability.

Other Actic innovations include dual sliding side doors, a "cross trainer"-style wheel and tire design (patent pending) with tread-wrapped 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and a versatile matching trailer with inflatable walls that converts to a comfortable sleeping space for three.

  8. New Peugeot 308 Shows Its Face

There's something about to hatch at Peugeot! In this week's issue of Auto Express you can see the first pictures of the all-new 308, the replacement for the 307. Based on top-secret insider information from parent company PSA, they are bound to send shockwaves through the French maker's top brass. Why? Because they reveal exactly how the car will look when it hits showrooms towards the end of 2006.

The most obvious element of our exclusive images is how the 308 gains Peugeot's new family look, with a nose similar to that of the recently introduced 407. The steeply raked headlamps are based on those of the 206-based H2O concept shown at the Paris Motor Show two years ago. But in profile, the car is leaner and lower than the 307, answering the biggest criticism levelled at the styling of the current model.

Our pictures show a five-door version of the 308, and according to our sources, the three-door will be completely different. It will get an even more streamlined roof and a coupé-like rear, similar to that of the new three-door Vauxhall Astra. In addition, Estate, SW and Coupé Cabriolet models will appear later, with the first two planned for 2007 and the CC for 2008. An MPV is also expected.

Distinctive traits on both three and five-door cars will include Peugeot's trademark 'wide-mouthed' grille and thick A-pillars. Inside, the newcomers will have a simple yet effective cabin layout. Controls will be kept to a minimum to free up storage space, while the dash is expected to be trimmed in a suede-like fabric to match the external colour scheme. With the rear wheels as far back as possible, it means buyers should get plenty of rear legroom.

The current 307's engine range is relatively modern, so few changes are likely when the 308 debuts. The base 307's 1.4-litre unit will be dropped for a 90bhp direct-injection 1.6 petrol powerplant, but the 138bhp and 180bhp 2.0 engines will remain more or less unchanged. Diesel options will include an entry-level 75bhp 1.4-litre engine, along with 90 and 110bhp 1.6 choices. The range-topping oil-burner will be powered by a 136bhp 2.0 unit, and is expected to be offered in sporty GTi guise alongside more conventional trims.

The car is expected to benefit from Peugeot's traditionally impressive handling characteristics. It will be based on a new platform - effectively a shortened version of the 407's - and will come with an advanced drive-by-wire braking system. The set-up links middle pedal inputs to the discs and pads by computer, doing away with the need for any kind of cable connection.

With the car aimed at small family hatchback rivals, safety is a key factor in the 308's marketing strategy. Multiple airbags will be standard, along with a host of electronic stability aids to keep the car on the straight and narrow.

Although official launch details are still under wraps, we understand the 308 has been pencilled in for a world debut at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. It will arrive in European showrooms that summer, and UK dealers can expect deliveries in the autumn. Prices will be similar to those of the 307.
